The collection consists of records of Local 12 (East Gadsden, Ala.) of the United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum, and Plastics Workers of America, and its predecessor the United Rubber Workers of America from 1943-1974. The correspondence (1943-1954) is mainly between the local union and officers and representatives of the international, other locals and unions, and the Goodyear Rubber and Tire Company. The minutes document the activities of the Local 12 (1949-1970), the ladies auxiliary (1952-1961), the Gadsden Industrial Union Council (1946-1962), the URW, District 2, (1944) and the URW District 8 (1944-1964). Records relating to the administration of Local 12 include correspondence of the Executive Board, the Board of Trustees, and various committees; reports to the Alabama Dept. of Labor; elections and rosters of division and department representatives; agreements; and notices to the membership. The plant operation records (1943-1974) include time-motion studies, wage rates including pay differentials by sex and race, wage rates for other companies, and surplus labor.
